Koh Phangan might be best known for its hedonistic Full Moon Party, but there is so much more to this lush, green and adventurous island. Of course, if you are following this blog, you probably already have an idea about the cornucopia of marine life that visiting scuba divers flock here for, so we would probably be preaching to the converted if we cite diving as our top pick of Koh Phangan activities. Instead, we want to give you a shortlist of our other tried and tested island activity favourites.
Here are our top 5 activities for adrenaline junkies in Koh Phangan
Aside from scuba diving, this has to be our favourite activity in Koh Phangan. Luckily for us, Wake Up! Wakeboarding is just down the road from Haad Yao in the quaint fishing village of Chaloklum. Chaloklum bay is home to the pier from which our dive boats depart and is a stunning setting for any water sport. Zipping around off the back of a speedboat is an exhilarating way to enjoy a view of the beach, jungle-topped mountains, and even nearby Koh Tao suspended in the azure waters.
We can’t recommend Wake Up! enough, Jamie is an outstanding instructor who can get even the wobbliest wakeboarding beginner up and flying in no time. Another plus is that it feels like such great value for money and is nowhere near the price you might expect.
If you want to try something a bit different, you can try water skiing or wake surfing too. For more details and to book, click here.
Treetop canopy adventure
This is an excellent way to get the blood pumping, especially if you are looking for a good group activity. Situated in the increasingly popular Baan Tai area, Just for Fun canopy adventure is suitable for older children (over 1.4m tall) and big kids alike.
After zip-lining through the trees and exploring the canopy’s network of treetop walkways, like the true Tarzan you are, you can cool off with a refreshing drink at the sea view bar. To find out more, visit their Facebook page here.
Unless you are a very advanced climber who has their own equipment, rock climbing on Koh Phangan has not been a possibility, until now. We are so happy that we can add this to the growing list of Koh Phangan activities. We had the pleasure of meeting Tex who has almost finished constructing his outdoor rock climbing and ziplining adventure course at Wang Sai waterfall near Mae Haad. Due to open in September, we can’t wait to go and experience climbing through the cooling waterfall and whizzing over the trees, ponds and streams below – followed by a nice sit down in that awesome treehouse of course!
Not for the faint hearted! This is a day party venue with a difference. Boasting the craziest waterslide in the whole of South East Asia, entertainment ranges from live music, DJs and gladiator-style games. It’s located on the way from Thongsala to Chaloklum- you can’t miss it. Check out the videos on the Slip N Fly Party website to see daring party-goers getting some serious air!
Located on the beautiful coast of Baan Tai, the kite surfing school has views of neighboring Samui and the marine park. It is also a great location for sunset drinks at the nearby open resort – Phangan Beach Resort.
The surroundings and quality of the equipment are second to none and you can even train to get your recognised Kite surfing license here. Check out their website for more information.
Make sure you manage to squeeze in some of these fun-packed, adrenaline fuelled Koh Phangan activities on your next visit. That is if you can manage it between all the scuba diving, beach lounging and party-going of course!
